A 39-year-old mother of three was the victim of the fatal hit-and-run on Sunday night, CTV Toronto has learned.

Nelisa Damota was struck by a vehicle on Bloor Street West, near Dovercourt, around 9 p.m. after she got out of her car while stopping at the bank.

Helio Batista, Nelisa’s husband, returned to the scene Monday, where he had watched his wife die.

“I heard a thud and I opened the door right away,” Batista said in an interview with CTV Toronto’s Janice Golding. “I couldn’t feel a pulse, I couldn’t feel anything, she wasn’t breathing – nothing.”

Nelisa was attempting to cross Bloor Street when she was struck by a vehicle and thrown onto the road, police said.

Nelisa was then struck by a second vehicle.

The first vehicle did not stay on the scene.

According to a witness the car “hit her straight dead on.”

Toronto police Const. Clint Stibbe said that since Nelisa was jaywalking, the driver of the vehicle who fled may not have faced any charges.

But now police “will be looking at likely criminal charges for failing to remain and failing to render assistance to someone who has been struck by a vehicle,” Stibbe said.

“It might not have been his fault, because she wasn’t crossing at the corner or at the lights, but he could have at least had the decency to stop,” Batista added.

Police canvassed the area Monday looking for anyone who may be able to help police.

The vehicle has been described as a white, four-door Mercedes-Benz S Class manufactured between 1986 and 1991. Police believe it will have some damage to its front end. It may also have a damaged headlight.
