Toronto police are still searching for a young woman who is wanted for questioning in the beating death of a homeless man.

Benson George Smith was attacked and fatally injured last Saturday evening in Pine Hill Cemetery near Kennedy and Danforth Roads.

Officers allege that Smith and an unidentified young woman got into a heated argument at the nearby Kennedy subway station, and the man was later followed to the cemetery.

Police say that one or two male friends may have been with the woman at the time of the attack. Smith also had a friend with him, police believe.

"At this time, Mr. Smith and his friend were approached by a female and two other males. The two males made a demand for property. The males commenced beating Mr. Smith," said Det. Mike Carbone on Friday.

Carbone added that they have a security camera image of the woman.

Police describe her as follows:

  • black, light complexion
  • 19 - 21 years old, 5'4" - 5'6"
  • black, curly hair in a pony tail
  • last seen wearing a blue check shirt with a white sweater, tight blue jeans and black shoes

Smith, 61, lived at a nearby homeless shelter. After the beating, he was taken to hospital with serious injuries. He was later taken off life support and became the city's 41st homicide victim of 2009.
