A police investigation into a woman who died in a park located near a west-end Toronto community centre Wednesday morning has been deemed a homicide.

In a statement released Wednesday afternoon, police say the woman -- believed to be in her 50s -- was found suffering from "trauma" in a park behind the Wallace-Emerson Community Centre, located at 1260 Dufferin St., at approximately 10:30 a.m.

First responders attempted to resuscitate the woman, but were ultimately unsuccessful.

A representative of the Toronto Emergency Medical Services previously said that the middle-aged woman had significant facial trauma, but neither EMS nor police could confirm reports that she had been shot.

Toronto Police Const. Victor Kwong told CTV Toronto earlier on Wednesday that one caller said the woman had been shot, and another told police that the woman fell.

Neighbours say they saw her going for a walk approximately an hour before she was found by first responders.

Her death has shaken the community.

"It's kind of crazy. She was an older lady. She would say hi. She didn’t speak much English, but she’d wave or nod, and acknowledge us," Kathryn Hughes told CTV Toronto.

A post-mortem has been scheduled for Thursday.

Anyone with information is asked to contact police at 416-808-7400, or Crime Stoppers at 416-222-TIPS (8477)
