A police officer is being credited for saving a baby's life after performing CPR on the newborn in an Oakville, Ont., parking lot.

Last month, a young mother was shopping with her toddler and infant at the Real Canadian Superstore, located at 201 Oak Park Blvd., at approximately 5 p.m.

The six-week-old baby, named Evan, had been sleeping in a car seat as his mother shopped. When when she started to walk back to her car with the baby, he woke up and began to cough, Halton Regional Police said.

The baby began to foam at the mouth and his skin turned blue. His mother called 911 from the parking lot.

Fortunately, Halton Regional Police Const. Rick Buys was conducting a traffic stop nearby. He rushed to the scene, and found a frantic, crying mother holding her limp baby.

Buys took the baby into the back seat of a car to check for vital signs and found he was not breathing and had no pulse. The officer performed CPR and the baby coughed and started to cry. Paramedics also helped reviving the young child.

He regained a pulse and began breathing again, before being rushed to hospital to be examined.

In a statement Wednesday, police said after several tests the infant now appears to be healthy.
