A man is in hospital Wednesday night suffering from wounds following an apparent gun battle between the drivers of two vehicles.

According to police, a motorist was taken to hospital with gunshot wounds to the arm and leg.

Police were called about a report that two gunmen in separate vehicles -- a silver Nissan and an SUV -- shot at each other while driving along Markham Road near Progress Avenue at about 6 p.m.

A shooting victim in the Nissan then drove to Toronto Police 43 Division on Lawrence Avenue East and collapsed. The other vehicle was reportedly found at a nearby apartment.

The closure resulted in major traffic backups. Several streets in the area were closed by police in the middle of the evening rush, including southbound Markham Road, eastbound Progress Avenue and the north and southbound ramps to the east and west 401 at Markham road.
