Police are appealing to the public after a pet dog was stolen from a parked van in Vaughan.

York Regional Police say Cap, a five-year-old Chihuahua that belongs to a family with four young children, was taken on Sunday.

According to its owner, the dog was sitting in the back of his grey Dodge Caravan in the east side of a movie theatre parking lot at 3555 Highway 7. Police said the man left his dog unattended in the vehicle at about 8 p.m. The car doors were locked and the windows were slightly open.

Police said when the man returned about an hour later, Cap was missing. According to police, the environmental conditions at the time were not a concern for the dog.

"There is nothing to suggest that the dog would have been distressed," police said in a statement on Tuesday. "It is believed that (the dog) was deliberately stolen from the van."

Anyone with information is asked to contact York Regional Police at 1-866-5423 ext. 7441, or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS.
