A Thornhill man has been charged with stunt driving after police stopped a vehicle clocked driving 200 kilometres per hour.

Ontario Provincial Police stopped a white Lexus headed east on Highway 407 at about 12:50 a.m. Wednesday morning, going twice the legal speed limit.

Police say the driver stopped without incident.

Timothy Leon, 47, of Thornhill, has been charged with stunt driving.

He will appear in Newmarket Traffic Court on Nov. 22, 2010.

The provincial law labels 50 kilometres per hour or more over the posted speed limit as stunt driving, which means much more severe penalties than a normal speeding charge.

The offence allows for an immediate 7-day licence suspension and a 7-day seizure of the motor vehicle used to commit the offence.

Upon conviction, the offence also carries a minimum fine of $2000 and 6 demerit points.
