TORONTO, Ont. - A leading Canadian research centre is promoting the launch of a new portal to inform people about stem cell research.

The virtual community is called Stem Cell City, and will allow those who join to learn more about regenerative medicine.

Ontario Premier Dalton McGuinty was at the launch Wednesday at the McEwen Centre for Regenerative Medicine in Toronto, which houses the labs of leading stem cell biologists.

McGuinty says that it seems as if every week there's a new breakthrough brought on by stem cell research somewhere in the world.

The site allows followers to learn about progress in finding cures and provides updates on work being done on heart disease, diabetes, brain disorders and spinal cord injury.

Stem cells were discovered by Toronto researchers 50 years ago, and Robert Klein, chairman of the California Institute for Regenerative Medicine, says they have launched a revolution in science and medicine.
