A Brampton man pleaded not guilty Sunday morning to charges related to a sexual assault inside a Toronto nightclub.

His lawyer, Sarah Williams, told reporters outside Old City Hall that the suspect is maintaining his innocence and that the charges have been "traumatic" for her client.

Williams said her client is "shaken up" but has the support of his family and friends.

Jagdeep Chahal, 32, made a brief court appearance Sunday and was released on $10,000 bail with two sureties. As a condition of his bail, he has also been forbidden from frequenting the city's nightclubs and bars.

Chahal turned himself into police accompanied by a lawyer on Saturday after authorities released a picture of a suspect to the media.

The image was taken from a nightclub in the King Street West and Brant Street area on Jan. 22, 2009.

A woman told police someone had slipped the date rape drug into her drink and that as a result, she was sexually assaulted.

The details of the case have been put under a publication ban.

None of the charges have been proven in court.
