Students and staff were prohibited from entering Northern Secondary School Friday morning after police said there was a possible security threat.

Toronto police received a call at around 6 a.m. about a potential security threat at the school and as a result, secured the North Toronto neighbourhood, located near Mount Pleasant Road and Eglinton Avenue.

Mount Pleasant Road from Broadway to Roehampton Avenues were closed in both directions for the investigation. They reopened just before 3 p.m.

Students and staff were sent to North Toronto Collegiate Institute, another school in the area located at Yonge Street and Eglinton Avenue.

Toronto police posted on Twitter to say there was a “threat” and they were “erring on the side of caution” by investigating.

The Toronto District School Board posted on Twitter as well, to say "afternoon classes at Northern Secondary School cancelled." They also said all students and staff are safe.

Toronto police spokesperson Allyson Douglas-Cook said officers "haven't located anything" but they continued to search the scene to be "extra cautious."

Around 3:30 p.m., the Toronto District School Board said on Twitter that the investigation was over and "classes will resume Monday."
