A restroom in an upscale Niagara-on-the-Lake hotel has ascended the porcelain throne in an annual ranking of best loos in Canada.

The Shaw Club Hotel and Spa's modern washroom -- which promises to deliver "five-star style with every flush" -- was voted the winner of this year Cintas Canada's Best Restroom Contest, the company said on its website.

"Style and radiance come together in this lavish loo," it said. "Upon entering the ladies' room, guests are greeted by a modern glass infinity sink and simple stainless steel fixtures. The stalls feature large glass doors which fog up for privacy when the door is locked."

The other runner-ups this year include Toronto's Patria restaurant, Planet Hollywood in Niagara Falls, the Calgary Zoo, and the Vancouver Airport.

Cintas spokesperson Leslie Molin previously told CTV's Canada AM that while ranking restrooms may seem like a silly thing to do, the cleanliness and design of a space underscores a business' level of customer service. For example, in the case of restaurant washrooms, patrons tend to equate a spotless washroom to a sanitary kitchen.

"They want it to be inviting. They want to walk in and know it's clean, it smells clean," Molin said in August.

This is the fifth year Cintas has run the competition. Previous winners include e11even in Toronto, the Cactus Club Café in Vancouver, and the outdoor Langley Street restroom in Victoria. Last year, the washroom that was given top honours was the Shell Super Station in Valleyview, Alta.
