The son of a former Toronto police chief is the new leader of the Toronto Police Association.

Const. Michael McCormack, 47-year-old son of former police chief Bill McCormack, won the presidency of the municipal police union. He defeated two other candidates.

McCormack polled 1,306 votes, news media reported on Tuesday.

His opponents, Const. George Tuck and Rondi Clark, got 1,200 and 1,038 votes respectively. Tucker has asked for a recount.

There were about 8,000 civilian and uniformed members eligible to vote.

The position of president opened up in the spring after president Dave Wilson announced he would be stepping down to head up the bylaw enforcement office for the city of Brampton.

Wilson had held the job of TPA president since 2004, with McCormack unsuccessfully running against him in 2006.

McCormack has said he will be more aggressive in fighting for improved salaries and benefits for the membership.

A 51 Division officer, McCormack was convicted in September for improper use of a police database. That case involved the detention of now-deceased Toronto Star reporter John Duncanson, the Globe and Mail reported.

He is well-known on the force for hosting FiteNite, a sometimes-raunchy charityboxing fundraiser.

Billy McCormack, the new president's brother, is facing corruption-related charges.
