The man who was struck by a Via train Friday has been charged with first-degree murder, according to Toronto police.

The man is the ex-boyfriend of the woman who was found dead on Danzig Street in Scarborough, police said.

The man reportedly jumped in front of a train in the Markham Road and Eglinton Avenue East area around 4:40 p.m. on Friday afternoon.

Police say the man lost both legs but is expected to survive. He has also been charged with failure to comply with bail conditions.

Police were called to the Danzig Street residence in Scarborough shortly after 4 p.m. The woman's body was found by her 14-year-old daughter.

The woman, who has not been identified, suffered "obvious signs of trauma," Det. Andy Singh told reporters at the scene. She was pronounced dead a short time later.

Police have not identified the man who has been charged.

More information is expected to be released in a news conference Sunday morning at 11 a.m.
