A man was shot and killed outside an unlicensed bar in Toronto’s west end Sunday morning.

Paramedics found the victim, in his 40s, at around 5:50 a.m. He was suffering from multiple gunshot wounds to the torso and later died in hospital.

The victim and his friends were leaving the Captain Social Club at Weston Road and Northland Avenue, south of Rogers Road, according to Toronto Police.

"It appears that there might have been a robbery as they exited the place, and a brief struggle,” said Det. Sgt. Graham Gibson.

The venue, formerly called Captain Whisper’s, is known to police. A man was shot and killed outside it in July 2006 and a shooting took place inside a year earlier.

The bar’s liquor license was revoked in 2010 by the Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario, which said it had grounds to believe that business there, "will not be carried on in accordance with the law."

Locals described Captain’s as noisy. “Every weekend there’s either a fight, people yelling,” said one resident, “it wakes up my son.”

Detectives are reviewing surveillance footage provided by nearby business owners.

The suspect is described as a white male of average build wearing dark clothing and a cap.
