A man has died after falling into the elevator shaft of a building in the city’s Entertainment District Saturday night.

Emergency crews were called to the CBC building near John and Front streets sometime before 7 p.m. after receiving reports that someone had fallen through a hatch in an elevator.

Toronto police Const. David Hopkinson told CP24 that the victim had reportedly fallen “quite a significant distance.”

“The firefighters went down into the elevator shaft. They started to perform CPR and first aid, but the man succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced on scene,” said Hopkinson.

Police said the Ministry of Labour has been called in to investigate the incident.

“Generally when we call the Ministry of Labour in there’s some indication that this is a worksite or workplace injury, or an industrial accident,” said Hopkinson.

No further details have been provided regarding the circumstances of the fall.
