A Toronto man is facing second-degree murder charges following the death of a 5-month-old baby in north east Toronto.
Last Saturday, police were called to Scarborough General Hospital after 5-month-old Ye-Lin Huang was brought to the emergency room suffering from serious injuries.
Hospital staff knew something was seriously wrong with the child and quickly rushed the boy to SickKids Hospital.
Police say Huang was put on life support and later succumbed to his injuries.
Officers arrested Huo Bin "Jack" Shen, 28, on Friday morning and have charged him with second-degree murder.
Investigators would not say whether Shen had been babysitting the child at the time of the incident but they believe he is a friend or boyfriend of the baby’s mother.
Police also remain tight-lipped about how the child arrived at Scarborough General Hospital, other than the fact that the baby did not arrive by ambulance.
Shen made a brief court appearance at a Scarborough courtroom Friday afternoon.
Defence lawyer Aaron McMaster said he will need to review the Crown’s evidence against his client before applying for bail.
