A male suspect is in hospital following a shooting during an attempted jewelry store theft in Toronto's east end.

The botched robbery happened at the Jewellery Exchange, located at 1921 Eglinton Ave. E., just east of Warden Avenue, at approximately 2 p.m. Police say the male suspect walked into the store with a firearm and attempted to rob one of the kiosks inside.

He was then confronted by an armed security guard and was shot, police say. It's not clear if the suspect fired any shots, but police say a weapon has been recovered.

After the shooting, police say the suspect fled the store to a vehicle, where he was located by officers and was taken into custody. Paramedics said he was transported to hospital with serious but non-life-threatening injuries.

Police say they do not believe the security guard was injured during the incident.

As a result of the incident, Eglinton was temporarily closed to traffic between Warden and Lebovic Avenue.
