An international fugitive wanted for attempted murder of a police officer has been arrested in Toronto.

In June 2010, a police officer was shot while conducting a search in a drug investigation in French Caribbean island Martinique, Toronto police said in a news release Wednesday. The officer survived his injuries but the suspect was able to flee the scene and police say they believe he fled the island soon afterwards.

In Dec. 2013, police in Martinique told Toronto authorities they believed the suspect was living in Canada. Police in Toronto were able to track down a suspect living in the city.

A 31-year-old man was arrested Monday in the area of Dufferin Street and Sheppard Avenue without incident.

Toronto police say the suspect is in custody pending extradition proceedings.

Cleus Ernest is facing an attempted murder charge.
