A four-year-old girl who was pulled unconscious from a swimming pool at a Vaughan fitness club Tuesday has died in hospital, York Regional police say.

Police were called to the fitness club on Racco Parkway near Dufferin Street and Highway 407 at around 9:45 a.m. Tuesday after the child was pulled from the water by a staff member who spotted her. The girl was attending a day camp run out of the fitness facility at the time.

Emergency crews on scene found the girl without vital signs and performed CPR before she was rushed to hospital

Police said Tuesday the girl was breathing on her own, but remained in critical condition.

They confirmed in a news release Friday that the toddler had died in hospital.

Homicide investigators are now looking into the child’s death and are asking any witnesses who may have been around the pool at the time to get in touch with police.

Anyone with information is asked to call the York Regional Police Homicide unit at 1-866-876-5423, ext. 7865.

The homicide unit regularly investigates the death of any child under five years of age.
