A noted gas-price watcher predicted Torontonians would be paying nearly 98 cents per litre on Wednesday.

And by shortly after midnight, some downtown stations were posting prices of 97.7 cents.

Liberal MP Dan McTeague predicted on his Tomorrow's Gas Price Today website that Toronto's average price will rise 3.4 cents per litre.

Meanwhile, the price in Ottawa had been predicted to rise 3.2 cents to 92.5 cents per litre.

Kitchener-Waterloo was to see a new price of 95.6 cents per litre, up 3.4 cents.

McTeague wrote: "In Toronto, major refiner/marketers are charging an unbelievable 6.1 cents/litre above the benchmark NYMEX wholesale price of gasoline."

In Ottawa, it's 4.2 cents.

He urged Canadians to email Prime Minister Stephen Harper and urge action on encouraging competition at the refinery/wholesale level of gasoline retailing.

The M.J. Ervin and Associates weekly pump price survey put the Canadian average at 96.9 cents per litre on Tuesday. It gave Toronto's price as 94.3 cents per litre.

When the price broke 94 cents last week, it was described as the highest price so far in 2009.
