Police in Niagara Falls rescued five people from the Niagara gorge over the long weekend after two separate groups became trapped and were forced to call 911.
Niagara Parks Police said rescue crews responded to separate incidents on Saturday and Sunday evening.
Police said that a group of three young adults became trapped after climbing over a protective guard rail downstream from the Falls, late Sunday evening. Police said one man managed to escape and called for help.
Emergency crews rescued the two remaining people using a ladder.
Police said the three men were charged with trespassing.
On Saturday, two visitors from Toronto were hiking in the Niagara Glen, near the base of the Falls, and became stranded in the dark without flashlights, police said.
Police said a rescue team located the couple and escorted them to safety at about 9:45 p.m.
“In both cases we were glad they called,” Niagara Parks Police Const. John Gayder said in a statement. “They knew it was too dangerous to press on so they contacted 911. We told them to stay where they were so they could avoid injury and not exhaust themselves.”
