A 15-year-old boy has been charged with first degree murder in the daytime shooting death of Evan Popoola.

The youth made a brief court appearance on Sunday.

He was arrested after Peel Region police were given special judicial permission to temporarily release his name and photograph.

Popoola, also 15, and known as 'Jiggz,' was found with apparent gunshot wounds in the area of St. Jude Separate School at 175 Nahani Way in Mississauga last Friday. He was pronounced dead in hospital.

Officers were called to the school after local residents reported hearing gunshots.

The handgun linked to the crime has not yet been found, and police do not know what happened prior to the incident or whether the victim knew his attacker.

"We're still asking that witnesses come forward," said Const. Wayne Patterson of Peel Regional Police. "We've had some come forward, there were some eyewitnesses at the scene, however we feel quite certain that there were other witnesses there."

Popoola's death is the 19th homicide this year in the Peel Region.
