Firefighters are working to contain an active four-alarm blaze in north Etobicoke that has gutted one store and spread into at least one neighbouring apartment.

The call for the fire at a fabric store in a plaza on Albion Road, near Islington Avenue, came in at around 6 p.m., a representative with Toronto Fire Services said.

The fire has since spread through the walls and roof into at least one apartment unit located above the store, and possibly two additional units as well.

Firefighters said that rolls of fabric housed on steel shelves in the basement allowed the fire to spread quickly.

Rapidly deteriorating floor conditions inside the store have made it dangerous for crews to fight the fire from inside the building.

The cause of the fire was not immediately known.

No injuries have been reported.
