A 19-year-old woman is dead after crashing her vehicle into a pole on Derry Road in Mississauga early Sunday.

The vehicle was travelling east on a stretch of Derry Road approaching Mavis Road around 3:30 a.m. It veered off the roadway and struck a pole as it approached John Watt Boulevard. The force of the impact split the vehicle apart.

Emergency responders arrived on scene after passersby called 911 to alert police. However the woman, who police say is from the Brampton area, was declared dead at the scene. She was the only person in the car.

Friends identified the woman as Bharti Sharma.

“Speed is definitely a factor in this accident due to the devastation of the vehicle,” Const. Fiona Thivierge told CP24 at the scene. “Alcohol is not a factor at this time. We’re not sure if it will be a factor. That will come through toxicology reports.”

The Major Collision Bureau is doing a full investigation of the crash.

A portion of Derry Road west of Mavis Road was shut down for several hours as police investigated. The road reopened around 11:30 a.m.

Police say the woman's family has been notified.

Investigators are appealing for any witnesses to come forward.
