Provincial police say speed may have been a factor in an early-morning crash that claimed the life of a 20-year-old man on Highway 401.

The motorist was driving his blue Honda in the eastbound lanes near the Whites Road exit in Pickering when he lost control of his vehicle at about 3 a.m., police said.

The vehicle struck a barrier and rolled several times. The man was thrown from his vehicle, which then burst into flames.

The victim, whose identity has not yet been released, was pronounced dead at the scene.

The accident shut down the highway for six hours, causing traffic headaches during the morning commute.

Some motorists were seen reversing up the on-ramp at Port Union Road, an illegal manoeuvre.

The accident wasn't cleared until after 9 a.m.

The deadly crash was the second in two days on 400-series highways.

On Wednesday afternoon, the middle-aged driver of a minivan was killed on Highway 400, south of Highway 89, when he slammed into a truck parked on the shoulder.

The driver of the truck was hospitalized after suffering from shock, police said.
