Durham Regional Police have re-launched the search for a 26-year-old man who went missing after his canoe capsized on Lake Ontario over the long weekend.
The man, whose name has not been made public, has not been seen since he and a 28-year-old relative capsized in a canoe between Whitby and Ajax on Sunday night around 10:30 p.m.
Both were wearing life jackets and the older man managed to make it to the shore and alert police.
Officials used coast guard ships and military aircraft during a 24-hour search, which was called off Monday evening. The search briefly resumed Tuesday morning, before police again called it off.
The man’s sister, Omaira Ahmadi, said early Tuesday that officials should continue searching, whether or not they think her brother will be found alive.
“I want to see my brother, alive or dead. I want his body. They can’t just call it off,” Ahmadi told CP24 on Tuesday.
“Until they find the body, they can't say he's dead. There are people I know that have been in the lake for five days, and when they are found they are alive. Miracles can happen. God is there.”
Durham Regional Police announced Tuesday afternoon that two marine vessels would continue searching for the lost man. Police said they would continue their search through the daylight hours, as long as weather cooperates.
Police said that weather and water conditions likely played a role in the canoe capsizing.
