Toronto police have charged a truck driver after a fatal accident last month involving a pedestrian who was struck while talking on a cellphone.

The charges against the driver were laid last week. The fatal accident occurred on the morning of March 25.

The pedestrian, a 28-year-old woman, died instantly when she walked into the side of the truck as it turned at the intersection of Front Street and Blue Jays Way. She was knocked to the ground and hit by the truck's rear wheels, police said.

At the time of the accident, police said the woman likely didn't see the truck in time because she was distracted by her cellphone.

The driver, a 32-year-old Toronto man, has been charged with failing to yield to a pedestrian. He will appear in court on July 14 to answer to the charge.
