A daycare worker has been charged with assault after a police investigation at a downtown childcare centre.

Police say a three-year-old boy was assaulted on Aug. 21 at Christine's Child Care Academy located on Dundonald Street near Yonge and Wellesley Streets.

Police suspect other children were abused at the centre and are appealing to parents to come forward if they suspect any wrongdoing.

The daycare is responsible for the care of approximately 50 children at any given time.

Daycare worker Leelavathi Moodley, 54, has been charged with assault.

Moodley's position at the childcare centre has been terminated and all parents have been notified about the investigation.

"We did what we were supposed to do by contacting Children's Aid as soon as we heard and the employee is no longer with us and the children are under quality care," a spokesperson from the daycare told CTV News on Tuesday.

She will make her first court appearance on Oct. 8.
