The Ontario Provincial Police say that a snowmobile accident north of Barrie led to the death of a 57-year-old man Saturday.

The man was riding on a marked trail when he struck a tree near Highway 400, officers said.

According to reports from the scene, the force of the impact was so great that the man's helmet cracked apart during the crash.

The man, who hasn't been named, died at the scene.

Police said he was riding with a group of snowmobilers, but he may not have been an experience rider.
