The woman brutally attacked and left for dead as her child was taken remained in critical condition Friday, while her accused attacker made a court appearance.

The courts have imposed a publication ban in the case, so no one can be identified.

However, it can be reported that the accused is the woman's common-law husband and the father of the child.

The attack took place on Thursday morning as the woman was leaving a building with her toddler son on Richgrove Drive, which is in the Eglinton Avenue and Martin Grove Road area.

Her attacker struck her with some type of hammer-like blunt object before scooping up the child and fleeing the scene as she lay on the ground.

A short time after the attack, a man turned up at a Peel Regional Police station in Brampton with the child.

Toronto Police arrived and charged the 35-year-old Brampton resident with attempted murder, assault with a weapon, possession of a weapon dangerous to the public peace and abduction.

He will be held in custody pending a bail hearing, which is scheduled for Tuesday.

The child is okay and is staying with relatives.
