FLESHERTON, Ont. - Six high school students face criminal charges after police allege a video showing the "shameless and cowardly" beating of a girl was posted on YouTube.

Ontario Provincial Police say the assault, which included the girl being kicked on the side of the face, happened May 25 at Grey Highlands Secondary School in Flesherton, Ont., about 50 kilometres south of Owen Sound.

Const. Steven Starr says the 16-year-old victim suffered minor injuries in the attack and has since recovered.

Investigators say the cellphone video showed the victim being beaten by two girls as other students watched, and some onlookers can be heard laughing and encouraging the attack.

Police say a girl tried to intervene but gave up when she was attacked by another girl who was watching the assault.

The accused are due in youth court July 12 in Owen Sound. The video was taken off YouTube at the request of authorities.

Six teens aged 15 to 17, including the person who took the video, face one or more Criminal Code charges. Charges include assault, counselling an indictable offence and causing a disturbance.

"I have seen the video and I am sickened by it," Insp. Bob Mahlberg, commander of the Grey County detachment, said in a statement.

"Behaviour like this has no place in our schools, or anywhere else for that matter. These kinds of incidents will always be investigated to the fullest extent and where the evidence exists charges will be laid."
