A Mississauga family received the keys to the affordable housing unit that they applied for three years ago.
Various organizations including Habitat for Humanity and The Daniels Corporation helped Shaukat Hussain, his wife and four kids become the owners of a new townhouse.
"I am a very excited and very happy and hopefully my children will be happy too," Hussain said.
His family immigrated from Pakistan in 2005 and applied for the housing unit three years ago. They worked for the home by fulfilling a 500-hour volunteer requirement.
The family says they feel lucky that they didn't have to wait the average 21 years that 14,000 others on the housing list have to wait.
"I feel amazing. I never thought I would have a home," said Hussain's wife, Humaira Bashir.
Doug Clark, a representative of Habitat for Humanity, said affordable home ownership opportunities need to be created for Mississauga families.
Ebrahim Khan, one of the family's four sons, said he likes the new space.
"It feels much better, because we were living in a crowded two-bedroom apartment, so three bedrooms and more space in the house is better for us," he said.
