A Toronto mother said she had the scare of her life after her 11-year-old daughter didn't come home from her North York-area school yesterday afternoon.

Amanda Goffi, who police say has a "reduced mental capacity" was found more than five hours later in Hamilton.

Her mom Debbie told CTV Toronto that instead of coming straight home after school, she hopped on a bus from the Don Mills and Finch Avenues area and rode it to Finch Station. She then took the subway to Union Station where she hopped on a GO train to Hamilton.

A good Samaritan finally noticed something was amiss and called police.

"I'm very, very thankful," said Debbie Goffi. "I know there are good people out there."

Goffi said Amanda was trying to find her way to her father who lives in Buffalo. However, she also said her daughter has never taken public transit -- especially by herself.

She said she's concerned her daughter was able to travel more than 100 kilometres before anyone noticed.

"It amazes me, it really amazes me," she said.

GO Transit released a statement saying, "Like most public transit systems, GO Transit does not prohibit or restrict minors from travelling on our system."
