A 19-year-old Milton man is facing an attempted murder charge after he allegedly broke into his ex-girlfriend's home early Wednesday and stabbed her as she lay sleeping.

Halton Regional Police said in a news release that the attack occurred at 2:15 a.m., when they allege the accused broke into the home and entered her bedroom.

"He then proceeded to attack her with a knife, causing serious wounds to her neck," police alleged. "The victim's parents awoke to her screams and the suspect fled the residence."

Paramedics took the victim to Milton District Hospital. Doctors treated her wounds and she was released by late morning.

Police located and arrested the accused about 45 minutes after the incident.

Halton police say the service's domestic violence investigative unit will be taking over the case.

Besides the attempted murder charge, the accused also faces two counts of assault with a weapon and one of break-and-enter.

He is being held in custody pending a Wednesday afternoon bail hearing.

Halton police said they would not be identifying either the accused or the victim.

No allegations against the accused have been proven in a court of law.
