A union spokesperson said Tuesday that GO train service will not be affected by a potential Canadian Pacific Railway strike.

GO Transit had been in preparations for service disruptions along the Milton line and at the Hamilton Go Centre station in the event of a strike.

The union said it was able to reach a deal Tuesday afternoon on the issue of commuter trains.

"Commuter trains will be operating," said the union.

Nearly 5,000 CP workers could legally strike 12:01 a.m. Wednesday.

A strike would stop shipments of grain, fertilizer, coal and other goods CP transports along nearly 24,000 kilometres of track throughout Canada and the U.S.

Major issues on the bargaining table include pensions, work rules and fatigue management.
