A man in his 20s has been charged after he was shot during an alleged attempted robbery in Scarborough on Thursday.

Police said a man parked across from the Jewellery Exchange at 1921 Eglinton Ave. E., just east of Warden Avenue, shortly before 2 p.m.

He allegedly put on a mask and gloves and picked up a handgun, then entered the store.

He then confronted two employees at a display counter, pointing the firearms at their heads while demanding jewelry, police said in a statement Friday.

Police said an armed security guard saw the attempted robbery and used his gun to shoot the suspect several times. The suspect was injured, dropped his gun and fled to his vehicle.

The man was located by police, who gave him first aid before sending him to hospital in an ambulance.

On Friday, 26-year-old Arthavan Rehnu-Vasanthakumar was formally charged in connection to the case.

He has been charged with:

  • Armed robbery
  • Use of a disguise with intent
  • Two counts of failure to comply with recognizance
  • Two counts of pointing a firearm
  • Possession of a loaded, restricted firearm
  • Unauthorized possession of a firearm
  • Possession of a firearm knowing its possession is unauthorized
  • Careless storage of a firearm
  • Possession of a firearm during the commission of an indictable offence
