A 55-year-old man is dead after he was struck by a Toronto Transit Commission bus in the city's west end Friday morning.

Police say the man slipped and fell under a bus in Dufferin Street's southbound curb lane near St. Clair Avenue West.

The man was discovered after the bus stopped to allow at least one of its 40 passengers to exit at 5:20 a.m.

Police said the bus began to pull away when the passenger who exited started to bang on the folding door to alert the driver to an emergency.

The passenger found the man under the bus's right front tire.

Const. Hugh Smith said the man was pronounced dead at the scene.

It was dark outside, there was fresh snow on the ground and sidewalks were slippery at the time, Smith said.

Smith said the bus driver, 28, was shaken by the incident.

Last week, a man died after he was dragged by a streetcar on Queen Street West.
