One man is in custody after an attempted bank robbery at the Royal Bank Plaza located in the heart of Toronto's financial district.

Police and Emergency Task Force officers descended on the scene at Bay and King Streets around 2 p.m. on Wednesday afternoon.

Police say the suspect entered the bank carrying a box that he claimed was a bomb and attempted to rob the financial centre.

Customers and employees were able to evacuate the building with no injuries reported.

Bomb disposal officers were on the scene and authorities are still trying to determine the contents of the suspicious package.

The Royal Bank Plaza in Toronto serves as the Royal Bank of Canada's head office.
