HALTON HILLS, Ont. - A Mississauga man has been sentenced to seven years in prison after being convicted of impaired driving causing death and other charges relating to a collision in Acton in 2010.

Halton regional police say the sentence was handed down Monday to Todd McGowan, 23, who was convicted in December. He was given two years credit for time in custody.

The other charges were impaired driving causing bodily harm, dangerous driving causing death, dangerous driving causing bodily harm and failing to stop at the scene of an accident.

McGowan was driving a car that hit a tree April 3, 2010, killing Jeff Sandles, 23, of Campbellville and seriously injuring four passengers.

Police say McGowan fled the scene but was apprehended five hours later while trying to leave Acton in a taxi.

He also received a 10-year driving prohibition and was ordered to provide a DNA sample to the RCMP national databank.
