TORONTO -- A 21-year-old man is facing charges after Toronto police say he attempted to hit an officer with his vehicle, then fled through a cemetery after a traffic stop Wednesday.

Police allege the officer had stopped the vehicle and was checking the licence plates when the driver suddenly accelerated toward the officer.

They say the officer jumped out of the way and the car struck a number of parked cars with people inside.

Police say the man then fled from the vehicle and was chased on foot through Mount Pleasant Cemetery (near Welland Avenue and Moore Avenue) before being arrested.

Const. Tony Vella says a female passenger in the man's car was also arrested but he had no further details.

Vella says the man is facing "a number" of charges.
