A man has been charged after a woman was stabbed to death in downtown Toronto Friday night.

47-year-old Thomas Dupe is facing one charge of first-degree murder.

Police said they were called to a building on Dundas Street near Parliament Street shortly before midnight, where they found Denna Smith suffering from stab wounds to her upper body on the second floor landing.

The 52-year-old was taken to hospital were she underwent emergency surgery, but died of her injuries shortly before 4:30 a.m.

Witnesses at the scene directed officers to the third floor were Dupe was heard on the fire escape, and they located him on the roof of a building north of the crime scene. Police also recovered a weapon.

Police said the victim and the accused knew each other from the area.
