SHELBURNE, Ont. -- A southern Ontario man charged in connection with an assault on a 14-year-old girl is now facing more charges, including attempted murder.

Provincial police say the girl was seriously injured after being assaulted Sunday in a "secluded and wooded area" of Shelburne, Ont., south of Georgian Bay, and was taken to a Toronto hospital.

A 19-year-old man was arrested later that day and charged with aggravated assault.

Police say additional charges of attempted murder, assault with a weapon and choking have now been laid following an investigation.

Cowan is scheduled to appear in court in Orangeville on Aug. 7.

Investigators say they are still searching for black clothing that may have been discarded in the northwest part of the town and they are urging anyone with information to contact police.

They say no further details can be released due to a publication ban.
