One man is dead and a woman is in hospital after a drive-by shooting in North York early Monday morning.

Toronto homicide detectives said the victims were in a vehicle travelling south on Weston Road when another vehicle pulled up and a passenger opened fire at about 4:15 a.m.

The man and woman were both struck by bullets. Their vehicle came to rest on the side of the road between Finch and Sheppard avenues.

Emergency crews took the victims to hospital, where the man later died. He has been identified as 40-year-old Mark Smith, of Toronto.

The woman, who has not been identified, suffered non-life threatening injuries. She has since been released.

Investigators are not yet sure of the motive behind the double shooting.

Police have cordoned off the area while they collect evidence.

Smith is the city's 25th homicide of the year and the 13th person to be killed by a firearm.
