One person is dead and a daycare centre was locked down after a man was shot in the head in the Eglinton Avenue West and Weston Road area.

Toronto police said they found the man, believed to be about 25 years old, bleeding on the ground on Denarda Street at Weston Road around 4:20 p.m. He was rushed to hospital with life-threatening injuries, but police said he succumbed to his injuries in hospital.

Witnesses in the area told police they spotted someone with a handgun and heard gunshots go off. Shell casings were also spotted on the ground at the scene.

Police set up a perimeter in the area and established a command post at a nearby coffee shop. Roads in the area were also closed off as police searched for the assailant.

All children at the nearby daycare centre – the Trimbee Infant Resource Centre – were safe and accounted for, police said. A lockdown at the facility was lifted just after 6 p.m. and police directed parents to collect their children by walking along Oxford Drive as Denarda Street remained closed off.

Officers are combing through surveillance camera footage to try and get more information about the incident. Police said initial descriptions of the assailant point to a lone man who stands about six feet tall with a thin build, wearing a black hoodie and jeans and carrying a black handgun.

No arrests have been made so far.
