Police are investigating after a lifeless man was found in the doorway of a North York pharmacy shortly before midnight.

The 26-year-old man was shot at a retail plaza on Wycombe Road, just west of Keele Street, at approixmately 11:30 p.m. He was found without vital signs in front of the Rexall pharmacy door.

The man was rushed to hospital with multiple gunshot wounds to the torso, but could not be revived, Toronto Paramedics Service said. The victim, who was known to police, was pronounced dead in hospital.

Area residents say they heard at least 10 gunshots late Thursday night. "I was just getting ready to go to bed, and then I heard 'bang, bang, bang, bang,'" Richard Cook told CTV Toronto.

Police believe the suspect may have ambushed the victim in the plaza's parking lot.

Officials have not released a description of a suspect, but a detective on scene said that there are several security cameras in the plaza and police will be going through all of the footage. They are also encouraging any witnesses to come forward.

The suspect is believed to have fled the scene in a vehicle.
