A Toronto man has been charged with first-degree murder in the death of his mother.

Thomas Brailsford, 49, was "taken into custody without incident" on Wednesday from an apartment located at 240 Scarlett Rd., Toronto Police said Friday in a news release.

Police say they found his mother, Barbara Starkey-Brailsford, 78, "with obvious signs of trauma." Medical personnel at the scene pronounced her dead.

The autopsy conducted Thursday on the victim's body found she died of "sharp force injuries," police said.

Starkey-Brailsford is Toronto's 24th homicide victim of 2010.

No allegations against Thomas Brailsford, who was scheduled to make a court appearance on Thursday, have been proven in a court of law.
