A man has been charged with first-degree murder after a dispute between neighbours turned fatal, Toronto police said Friday.

Police said they found a 47-year-old man suffering from stab wounds when they arrived at a Keele Street apartment, in Toronto's west end, late Wednesday night.

When police arrived on the scene, a neighbour had barricaded himself inside a nearby home. Police surrounded the home and fired tear gas inside.

The next-door neighbour was treated in hospital for exposure to the gas.

The stabbing victim, the 16th homicide in Toronto this year, was rushed to hospital but succumbed to his injuries. His name won't be released until police contact his family. An autopsy on his body is scheduled for Friday.

Toronto resident Harry Maxwell Crombie, 42, has been charged with first-degree murder.
