Second-degree murder charges have been laid in connection with the strangulation death of a woman one week ago.

Police were called to a home near Allen Road and Eglinton Avenue last Thursday at around 10:30 a.m. and found a woman without any vital signs.

The victim, since identified as 62-year-old Ilka Dimitrova, was taken to hospital for treatment, but she was pronounced dead four days later on Monday, Jan. 17.

An autopsy found that strangulation was the cause of death.

The suspect in the case, a 41-year-old man, was initially charged with attempted murder.

However, following the victim's death, that charge was upgraded to second-degree murder.

Ivo Anguelov, 41, will appear in court on Monday, Jan. 31 at 10 a.m.

The death is the city's fifth homicide of 2011.
