Police have laid charges against a 35-year-old Toronto man following the alleged abduction of his four-year-old daughter from her mother’s home earlier this week.

An Amber Alert was issued for the girl Monday morning after her father is alleged to have broken into his ex-wife’s home in Aurora where he took their daughter without permission.

Police said he also assaulted his ex-wife during the incident.

The man and girl were spotted in a vehicle near Bancroft by OPP officers almost five hours after the Amber Alert was issued. Officers attempted to stop the vehicle several times before calling off the chase.

The vehicle the man and girl were travelling in eventually crashed and rolled over in Pembroke, Ont. – about two hours northwest of Aurora – when it rounded a curve.

The child suffered non-life-threatening injuries and was taken to hospital where she was later released.

The man remains in hospital with minor injuries.

Ontario’s Special Investigations Unit is investigating what led to the crash.

Police said the accused is charged with two counts of assault, one count of abduction and one count of break and enter.

He appeared in court Thursday by audio link.

Police have said the investigation is ongoing and encouraged anyone with information to contact the Integrated Domestic Violence Unit at 866-876-5423 ext. 2480 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).
