A 26-year-old man has been arrested after a woman woke up to find a stranger in her bedroom early Tuesday morning.

Police said that a man broke into a home on Lyndhurst Avenue, near Bathurst Street and St. Clair Avenue, at approximately 6:30 a.m. The man, who was armed with a knife, went into the woman's bedroom and attempted to strangle her, the woman told police after calling 911.

Police say she was allegedly assaulted before the man fled the home through the back door after the woman woke up, saw him, and screamed to her roommate for help.

Sgt. Darlene Ross said the woman “physically appears to be in good condition” but is “very upset, very shaken.”

A man was taken into custody after police set up a perimeter in the area. He was later arrested.

Police say he will be charged with a number of offenses including sexual assault with a weapon, break and enter and possession of property obtained by a crime.

Christopher Barber is scheduled to make a court appearance Wednesday morning.
